My littlest fellow turned four this past weekend. Four whole years old! If asked his new age, he first spends a few concentrated moments organizing his fingers so he can hold them out to show you while declaring, "I am fo-wuh now!"
Honestly, I have spent many long moments this weekend gazing at the longer-limbed, capable bodies of my three children, marveling at these beautiful creatures that I am lucky enough to walk beside. It was just mere moments ago that they were babes in arms, reliant on me for everything. Now, my little Huckley tries to show us all just how capable he is himself, racing to keep up with the older two. Sometimes, he even bursts ahead, other times, his steam sputters to a halt and his little self is overwhelmed with the fact that he is younger, and thus, smaller. Oh, being four!
We sort of have a birthday week around here as Sunshine's birthday is just a few days after Huckley's. We began with a little gathering of his friends, and it was a treat that this is a very mild mosquito year so we could be outdoors (and at the pond!) for his birthday party. I made a pinata late the night before which didn't dry, so in the morning Josh recommended drying it out in our oven. A great idea until it exploded all over the inside of the oven (!) and Forrest leaped to the rescue in the morning and made a pinata himself. I love it! He saved the day. He also took it upon himself to help the little boys make driftwood boats to set sail on our pond...what a lucky Huckley to have a good big brother!
Yesterday, to celebrate both Huckley and Sunshine, our family went for a wonderful hike along our nearby lake. Huckley was our enthusiastic leader on the trail, declaring every few steps, "Wow! Look at this! Wow! This is amazing!" I swear he grew a few iches in stature on that hike!
We roasted some smokies, some of us swam in the cool mountain lake, and we all made wishes for the birthday boat that set sail down the lake. It was a well-needed family day celebrating the birthday people.
Happy 4th birthday, my darling son! Thank you for making life so snuggly and sweet, filled with lots of fierce hugs and tender heart-filled moments. You are a treasure!!!!!
